Bhutan adventure day by day details  

day 1: Arrival in Paro & Exploration of Thimphu – A Kingdom Unveiled
  • Scenic flight into Paro Valley
  • Visit to the National Museum of Bhutan
  • Welcome dinner and orientation
Your multisport adventure through the enchanting Kingdom of Bhutan begins with one of the world's most scenic flights, landing in the breathtaking Paro Valley.  After touching down and breathing in the crisp mountain air, we'll enjoy lunch and then a short, picturesque drive to Thimphu (60km/2 hours). Time permitting, we'll visit the National Museum of Bhutan, where you can admire a fascinating collection of rare artifacts, art, traditional textiles, and other intriguing pieces. This afternoon, we'll get our bikes ready and enjoy a short sightseeing ride around the city.  We'll cap off our first day in Bhutan with a welcome dinner and orientation, setting the stage for the adventures to come.

day 2: Pangri, Tango & Cheri Gompas – Monasteries & Mountain Majesty
  • Cycling through a less-traveled region of Bhutan

Today's ride takes us through a region often missed on other Bhutan bike tours. We'll pedal north to visit the impressive Pangri, Tango, and Cheri Gompas, fortified monasteries that have provided spiritual guidance for centuries. Tango and Pangri Gompas are now centers of higher learning, with Pangri specializing in astronomy and Tango instructing monks in Buddhist philosophy. Cheri Monastery, built in 1620 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in memory of his father, is adorned with beautiful frescoes of enlightened saints, including a stunning statue of Tara. It's now a center for three-year retreats for monks.

day 3: Dochula Pass to Punakha – Himalayan Views & Tropical Descent

This morning, we'll shuttle to Dochula Pass (cycling up is also an option). The views from the pass are absolutely magnificent, offering a sweeping panorama of the eastern Himalayas. After enjoying lunch at the pass, we'll begin a thrilling 26-mile descent to Punakha. The ride takes us through lush temperate forests and a semi-tropical zone bursting with orange trees, bananas, and bamboo.
Ride: 31 mi / 50 km (43 mi / 69 km if you cycle up), Land: alpine descent, Pass: Docula (3100 m)

day 4: Punakha Dzong & Rural Bhutan – Temples & Tranquility

Today's relatively flat ride gives us the chance to visit some of the region's famed temples and experience the peaceful Bhutanese countryside. We'll explore the impressive Punakha Dzong, built in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, the Buddhist saint who unified Bhutan in the 17th century. Punakha served as Bhutan's capital until 1955 and is still the winter residence of the Je-Khenpo (Chief Abbot) and the central monk body. We'll spend another night in Punakha.

day 5: Hiking & Rafting in Punakha – Trails & Thrills
  • Hiking through the hills around Punakha
  • Visiting local villages and a hilltop temple
  • Rafting the Pho Chu River
We're switching gears today! We'll set out on a hike through the hills surrounding Punakha, visiting small villages and a temple overlooking the valley. From this vantage point, we'll enjoy incredible views of the area we cycled through yesterday and will raft later today. After a delicious Bhutanese lunch, we'll take to the water and raft the Pho Chu River. This scenic float includes some fun Class 2 and 3 rapids, a refreshing way to conclude our visit to the Punakha Valley.

day 6: Return to Paro & a Family Visit – Local Life & Warm Hospitality

After breakfast, we'll shuttle back to Paro, where we'll spend our final two nights. Our hotel here is the former residence of the local governor. In the afternoon, we'll visit a small village further up the valley, the home of our Bhutanese manager's family.  This is a wonderful opportunity to experience daily life in Bhutan as we visit the family farm and explore the village.

day 7: Tiger's Nest Monastery & Farewell Dinner – A Spiritual Journey & Celebrations

  • Farewell dinner with traditional Bhutanese dancing
This morning, we'll embark on a memorable hike to the iconic Tiger's Nest Monastery (Taktshang Goemba). We'll have permits to actually enter the temple and spend much of the day in the mountains, hiking and sightseeing. The Taktshang Goemba, one of Bhutan's most spectacular monasteries, clings to a cliff face high above the valley floor. Upon returning to Paro, you'll have some free time for last-minute souvenir shopping.  We'll then gather for a farewell Bhutanese dinner, sharing stories of our adventure and celebrating this incredible country.

Getting there

The Bhutan Multipsort Tour meets and ends at Paro International Airport in Paro, Bhutan. Guides will meet arriving flights, between 9:00 and 12:00

Guests should plan their flights to arrive in Paro before 12:00 (noon) on Day 1 of the tour and their departing flights after 10:00 (10 am) on Day 8.

  Travel Tip:  Flights to Paro depart first thing in the morning. Guests might want to come to Bangkok a day or two early for a more relaxed journey.
